On March 23, LG Energy Solution celebrates the two-year anniversary of its joint venture with Stellantis to establish NextStar Energy in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. This plant, which is Canada’s first large-scale EV battery plant, is set to play a crucial role in supporting Canada’s EV transition by meeting a significant portion of the region’s vehicle production needs.
NextStar Energy’s battery plant in Windsor, which is a CAD 5 billion (USD 3.68 billion) investment, is poised to bring thousands of new jobs to the area. With an unwavering focus on innovation, the advanced facility produces cutting-edge lithium-ion battery cells and modules to cement its status as a leading player in Canada’s EV battery industry.
NextStar Energy has recently achieved its initial goal of commencing the production of its first module. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and other government officials visited the state-of-the-art facility to inspire and support the employees. Trudeau marked the occasion by joining Danies HS Lee, CEO of NextStar Energy, in signing the first-ever EV battery module produced by NextStar Energy, as a unique way of offering his sincere congratulations.
Ford also commemorated the production of the plant’s first EV battery module by engraving his name on this significant piece. His presence, along with Trudeau, has ignited excitement in Ontario regarding the job opportunities and economic revitalization expected to come with the operation of the NextStar Energy facility.
Canada is striving to solidify its leading position in using electricity from renewable energy sources, while recognizing the importance of building a robust battery ecosystem to achieve this. LG Energy Solution and Stellantis expect NextStar Energy’s new plant will act as a catalyst for the development of a strong battery supply chain in Canada.
Moreover, Canada aims to establish job opportunities through this LG Energy Solution and Stellantis joint venture, seeing it as an opportunity to positively impact people’s lives and unlock a cleaner, greener environment for future generations.
Specifically, NextStar Energy aims to exceed an annual production capacity of 45GWh and generate around 2,500 new jobs in Windsor and its surrounding regions. Additionally, it is committed to continuously hiring many additional employees, as it ramps up production.
Meanwhile, NextStar Energy is one of eight battery plants across North America that LG Energy Solution has secured to meet the growing demands of the burgeoning EV market. As part of this massive commitment to the region, it remains committed to constructing large-scale battery plants across Canada, pledging to become a cornerstone of its battery ecosystem.
