Danies Lee, CEO of NextStar Energy, the joint venture of LG Energy Solution and Stellantis, has been honored by Maclean’s magazine with a place on its prestigious “The Power List: Tech” for 2024. This recognition highlights the wider impact of NextStar Energy’s battery plant in Windsor, Ontario, as Canada’s first-ever large-scale EV battery facility which is dedicated to raising Ontario’s standing in the EV industry.

Maclean’s, a national magazine known for its in-depth stories on politics, culture, trends, ideas, and personalities, annually recognizes 100 influential figures across various fields such as technology, business, and climate. This year, Lee has been honored for his valuable contributions to Canada’s tech sector.

With his leadership, the CAD 5 billion (USD 3.68 billion) NextStar Energy plant has driven the expansion of Canada’s EV battery capacity, which is what earned him a spot alongside some of the greatest innovators in the nation. Canada’s first large-scale EV battery plant is set to become one of the largest in North America, and this form of recognition highlights the pivotal role NextStar Energy is playing in advancing the EV industry at such a significant moment.

The partnership between LG Energy Solution and Stellantis has transformed Ontario into a thriving EV hub and seeks to reestablish Windsor as a global automotive powerhouse. With an expected annual battery production equivalent to more than 450,000 vehicles per year, this state-of-the-art facility is poised to contribute significantly to Stellantis’ commitment to reaching 50% of its North American sales with EVs by 2030. It goes without saying that this investment and development project is a major boost for Ontario and the entire EV industry.

The plant aims to achieve an annual production capacity of 49.5GWh and bring around 2,500 new jobs to Windsor and its surrounding areas. In 2022, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called it an investment in Canada’s workers, communities, and future by creating thousands of jobs and putting Canada at the forefront of the clean economy.

The Windsor plant is committed to establishing a diverse range of jobs for the local community as it recognizes the importance of welcoming local talent to its growing team.

Meanwhile, NextStar Energy’s plant, which will soon celebrate its first anniversary, produced its first battery module sample, drawing significant attention from the industry and inspiring a visit from two major figures in Canada, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Doug Ford. The battery module assembly is expected to officially commence this year, with cell manufacturing launching in 2025. NextStar Energy promises to play a pivotal role in meeting customers’ various demands while revitalizing the battery ecosystem as the sector grows and flourishes in the future.
