Re:All Campaign: Upcycling Discarded Battery Separators to Build Circular Battery Ecosystem

LG Energy Solution recently launched the ‘Re:All Campaign: Return Better Than Before  (BetteReturn)’ which promotes battery circular ecosystem by creating upcycled products, such as small crossbody bags and pouches, from discarded separators generated during battery manufacturing. These products are sold to LG Group employees and the Korean public. All proceeds from the campaign will be donated to environmental protection and ecosystem restoration efforts.

Embodying LG Energy Solution’s deep commitment to realizing a sustainable future through real initiatives, the ‘Re:All Campaign’ emphasizes the creation of battery raw materials recycling systems as a key focus of LG Energy Solution’s ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) management. Under the theme of ‘Return Better Than Before (BetteReturn),’ LG Energy Solution plans to make various everyday items, such as crossbody bags, book cover pouches and tablet pouches, from recycled separator membranes.

The battery separator enhances safety by preventing the battery’s anodes and cathodes from touching. As most waste separators generated during battery production processes were disposed of with other general waste, LG Energy Solution is showcasing its efforts for circular ecosystem through an upcycling movement that gives waste materials a second life by transforming them into valuable products.

To establish a virtuous cycle for battery resources, LG Energy Solution is also advancing various business developments and technologies. For example, used batteries are now being collected to diagnose their residual capacity and condition and to their ‘reuse’ potential. LG Energy Solution is also disassembling used batteries to extract critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese for ‘recycling.’

Battery recycling is gaining prominence as it helps mitigate the environmental pollution created from the mining of nickel, cobalt, and lithium, and ensures the stable supply of these finite resources. Recognizing the finite nature of these essential minerals, LG Energy Solution is establishing resource circulation systems that collect, recycle and reuse used batteries in North America and Europe, among other regions. LG Energy Solution aims to streamline the collection of end-of-life batteries by partnering with like-minded companies with robust collection networks near its key locations. It also aims to ensure access to competitive recycled metal resources through collaborations with post-processing recyclers boasting proven mass production technologies.

Meanwhile, LG Energy Solution continues to prioritize ESG values across all aspects of its business to create more value for its discerning customers. Going forward, it will continue to lead the promotion of environmental sustainability while achieving greater levels of customer value, as it paves the way to a more sustainable future.
