- LG Energy Solution unveils the world’s first pouch-type high-voltage mid-nickel (HV Mid-Ni) CTP, along with high-performance products, such as high-silicon anode cells, and new business initiatives including BMTS.
- Using innovative CTP technology and high-performance battery solutions, LG Energy Solution lays groundwork for the future of electrified commercial vehicles.
The International Automobile Exhibition (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung, IAA) Transportation 2024, the biggest commercial vehicle exhibition in the world, welcomed 145,000 visitors and 1,485 exhibitors to its grounds in Hannover, Germany from September 17 to 22. With the most influential commercial vehicle OEMs and battery companies in attendance, LG Energy Solution presented its innovative battery capabilities and ability to meet commercial OEM customer needs with optimal batteries. The company is also solidifying its leading position by paving the way for commercial vehicle electrification.
For its highly anticipated IAA Transportation debut, LG Energy Solution carefully arranged a 220-square-meter booth under the overarching theme of “Opening a New Horizon – Power Solutions for Commercial EVs,” featuring four distinct zones – the Highlight Zone, the Battery Portfolio with Automotive Batteries Zone, the Battery Portfolio with Cylindrical Batteries Zone, and the Core Competency Zone.
The booth starts with the Highlight Zone, where LG Energy Solution unveiled its next-generation pouch-type high-voltage mid-nickel (HV Mid-Ni) CTP (Cell-to-Pack) for the first time. Designed especially for commercial vehicles, this pack utilizes HV Mid-Ni chemistry to reach a max driving range of 600 km (373 miles) per charge while ensuring safety for both cargo and passengers, and supporting a life-time mileage of 2.1 million km (1.3 million miles) over 5,000 charging cycles. LG Energy Solution’s HV Mid-Ni chemistry technology balances cell capacity and safety by optimizing nickel content, increasing energy density through its sophisticated high voltage design. Compared to conventional High-Ni chemistry products, this solution is good for 5,000 charging cycles and offers a higher recycling value than LFP.
LG Energy Solution’s innovative CTP technology-based manufacturing method removes modules from traditional electric vehicle batteries to unlock a lighter, safer battery pack. It boasts advantages in three key areas. First, the pouch-type CTP pack utilizes the lightweight properties of pouch cells while minimizing its number of components to reduce weight, and retains its structural integrity without the need for modules. Second, it eliminates modules and incorporates more cells to open the door to higher energy density and longer driving ranges. Finally, fewer components mean lower material costs and allow the efficient management of manufacturing expenses through process optimization.
To address the growing need for electric commercial vehicles, LG Energy Solution has been providing high-performance, high-quality pouch-type batteries to various commercial vehicles and related industries.
In the Battery Portfolio with the Automotive Batteries Zone, products featuring high-silicon anodes, which significantly reduce charging time, and NCMA products, which boast enhanced energy density and stability through aluminum in high-nickel compositions, were put on display.
In the Cylindrical Batteries Zone, LG Energy Solution showcased its cylindrical batteries which demonstrate enhanced production stability developed over years of innovation in mass production and energy solutions, including the 1865 and 2170 product lines. The exhibition also featured the 2170 cell, 2170 module and pack, and 2170 pack and junction box.
Also, presented at the tradeshow were its next-generation NCM-based products with longer lifespans and range, current pouch and cylindrical products engineered for the high-potential commercial vehicle market.
The Core Competency Zone was where LG Energy Solution introduced its new Battery Management Total Solution (BMTS) and Battery as a Service (BaaS) businesses, which leverage advanced diagnostics for EV batteries, focusing on metrics like batteries’ state of health, remaining useful life, potential failures, and safety issues to optimize performance. Highly effective and accurate, these solutions have far surpassed those of its competitors.
Recently, LG Energy Solution unveiled its new brand, B.around, as a next-generation BMTS offering comprehensive battery management through cutting-edge hardware and software tailored to the customer. This system is divided into four categories: battery management system (BMS), application software, software defined vehicles (SDV), and cloud solutions.
BaaS is an extended business model that utilizes core technologies in four main areas: leasing solutions, certification of used batteries, battery remanufacturing or reuse, and connectivity support for OEMs or fleet management.
The company also shared its long history at the forefront of battery innovation dating back to 1992, the year it initiated its lithium-ion battery research. This technology leadership has lived on thanks to ongoing R&D and large investments in achieving technological advancements. LG Energy Solution also highlighted how it established the largest global production system through strategic partnerships with various companies, as well as its role as a leader not only in tech, but also in driving the transition to a decarbonized society by addressing global environmental challenges and leading by example through diverse, impactful ESG initiatives.
With all these innovations and more on show, IAA Transportation 2024 was the place to witness LG Energy Solution’s battery innovation and technology leadership in person.
