Led by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), this annual event has raised awareness of intellectual property (IP) rights since the beginning of the new millennium, celebrating the creative individuals and companies committed to driving progress. On this occasion, LG Energy Solution looks back at all the IP it has pioneered—advancing the battery industry and shaping the future of energy.
The race for battery innovation has never been fiercer, with companies filing patents at an unprecedented pace, hoping to take an early lead in next-generation battery technologies such as solid-state and lithium-sulfur batteries. As the competition heats up, the push for R&D is stronger than ever—because in the world of energy solutions, innovation isn’t just an advantage; it’s the future.
LG Energy Solution has nearly doubled its patent portfolio in just five years, reinforcing its commitment to IP as a world-leading battery innovator. The company is not only strengthening patent protection but also actively leveraging its patents for commercialization.
In its 2024 business report, LG Energy Solution revealed it held a total of 69,631 registered patents as of the end of 2024—23,635 in Korea and 45,996 overseas—underscoring its strategy of securing and utilizing IP assets in the global battery industry. Over the past five years, the company has prioritized patents with a strong commitment to R&D, more than doubling from 31,120 patents held in 2020.
Recognizing that patents are a company’s one of the most powerful assets, LG Energy Solution has consistently invested in R&D for more than three decades, surpassing competitors and achieving what it calls the “Accumulation of Time”—a competitive edge forged through relentless technological advancement. “Patents are the clearest example of this achievement,” the company stated.
LG Energy Solution’s vast portfolio of influential patents covers the entire battery value chain, from foundational first-generation technologies widely used in battery manufacturing to cutting-edge third-generation innovations. Its IP spans battery materials, manufacturing processes, pack design, and battery management systems (BMS), making it nearly impossible for newcomers to manufacture lithium-ion batteries without relying on one or more LG Energy Solution-patented technologies.
The company also holds numerous specialized design patents, including Double Layer Slot Die Coating (DLD) technology, which enhances anode production efficiency, and Carbon NanoTube (CNT) pre-dispersion technology. In cathode development, LG Energy Solution has been at the forefront of high-nickel and mid-nickel NCM technologies.
“Over the decades, LG Energy Solution has built one of the most robust, multi-generational patent portfolios in the world, covering everything from battery materials, cells, and packs to BMS while securing patents for future battery technologies,” a company spokesperson stated. “As one of the original battery innovators, we are committed to fostering fair competition in the industry.”
Looking ahead, next-generation batteries will transform various industries, including EVs, energy storage systems (ESS), portable electronics, and smart grids. Innovation will be largely focused on advancing energy density, charging speeds, lifespan, and eco-friendliness. In response, LG Energy Solution will prioritize product competitiveness while securing next-generation technologies to reaffirm its technology leadership and stay at the forefront of innovation for many years to come.
