Initial substantial investment in U.S. EV battery facilities created significant manufacturing potential. As EV demand softened, many of these facilities quickly adapted, diversifying their capabilities to meet the shift toward energy storage systems (ESS).
ESS is emerging as a key growth driver in preventing power outages, managing rising electricity needs, and supporting aging power grids. According to the American Clean Power Association (ACP), surging U.S. energy storage deployment signals a structural change in the power sector, making storage essential for grid reliability and demand fulfillment.
This year, LG Energy Solution anticipates year-on-year growth of over 10 percent in global EV production and over 40 percent in global ESS installations. In North America, ESS is expected to account for about half of total battery demand, driven by tech companies’ increased investments in data centers and policy support, including the extension of the clean energy investment tax credit (ITC). As data centers require stable, long-term ESS projects, grid-scale ESS – already comprising about 95 percent of regional ESS demand – is positioned for strong growth this year.

At the same time, the company plans to reinforce its operational capabilities by raising global ESS production capacity to over 60 GWh this year, with more than 50 GWh based in North America.
