LG Energy Solution Showcases BMS Innovation and Global Collaboration at China’s TEDA Forum 2025

  • LG Energy Solution advances safety diagnostics, degradation estimation, and service solutions to lead the industry forward.
  • Strengthening partnerships in China to accelerate next-generation BMS technologies.

From September 11 to 14, 2025, the eyes of the automotive world were fixated on Tianjin, China, as it hosted the 21st Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA) International Forum. Co-organized by the China Automotive Technology & Research Center (CATARC), the China Society of Automotive Engineers, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), and the China Automotive News, with special support from the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area Administrative Commission, this year’s event gathered key leaders and experts from across the industry.

This year’s theme, “New Momentum, New Chapter, Global Reach, inspired high-level discussions on the pressing challenges facing the automotive industry. During the High-Level Forum session on “Deepening Cooperation to Enhance Overall Efficiency of the Automotive Industry System,” Dal Hoon Lee, Group Leader of Battery Management System (BMS) R&D at LG Energy Solution, delivered a keynote speech titled “China and LG Energy Solution: Collaboration on BMS Innovation.”

LG Energy Solution began its BMS journey in 2002 and has been a leading innovator in this space ever since. Today, it works alongside more than ten major global OEMs, underscoring its strong presence and trusted expertise in the field.

“For more than 20 years in BMS innovation, our guiding question has remained the same: how can we deliver safer, more durable batteries to our customers?” said Lee. “To find the answer, we’ve looked beyond traditional hardware and software to explore the optimization of core BMS algorithms. This includes continuous advancements in safety diagnostics and enhancing the accuracy of state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH). More recently, we have expanded into battery management and inspection services, in pursuit of greater value for customers.

Achievements in Safety, Degradation Estimation, and Services

1) Safety Diagnostics

In the past, once a battery was installed in a vehicle, detecting improper use or unexpected failures during operation was challenging. To address this, LG Energy Solution developed safety diagnostic technology that identifies major cell defects—such as physical damage or short internal circuits with over 90% accuracy.

This technology is backed by the disassembly and analysis of more than 130,000 cells. Building on this foundation, the company is now expanding its diagnostic scope using OTA (Over-the-Air) data, ensuring continuous improvement. Today, this safety diagnostic software is used by more than ten major global OEMs.

2) Degradation Estimation and Prediction

LG Energy Solution’s advanced solutions combine AI models with physics-based approaches to deliver high-precision tools for battery degradation estimation and predictive analytics. Scalable across a wide range of vehicle types—from compact EVs to large commercial vehicles—these solutions can also be deployed through cloud platforms. Some examples are:

– SOH Model without Cell Data (FRISM) : This technology accurately estimates battery health using real-world driving data without separate cycle test data.
– LAM/LLI Analyzer (LLAZER, Loss of Active Material / Loss of Lithium Inventory)
: Analyzes actual operating data, decomposing battery degradation into its components—cathode, anode, and electrolyte—to precisely identify the root causes of capacity fade, internal resistance, and a decline in overall performance.
– Battery Life Simulator (BLiS): Beyond assessing current degradation status, this simulator combines past usage patterns with physics-based models to predict future battery aging and performance trends.

3) Battery Service Solutions

In Korea, LG Energy Solution has rolled out an array of battery service offerings, including extended warranties, inspections, and management solutions. Inspections cover vehicle repair, used car transactions, and battery reuse, and are supported by one-time diagnostic technology for fast, accurate assessments of battery conditions. Management solutions include a battery health management program—leasing programs designed to extend battery lifespan—as well as battery swap services that enhance user convenience.

Earlier this year, the company launched small-scale R&D projects in China and plans to expand these efforts. With these collaborations set to span various fields, including lithium plating diagnostics and AI foundation model, LG Energy Solution is fully committed to forging lasting partnerships to take BMS innovation to new heights.

With a wealth of experience and expertise in the development of BMS, LG Energy Solution continues to pioneer advancements in safety diagnostics, degradation estimation, and service solutions. The company is poised to play a key role in shaping the next era of BMS technologies.
