LG Energy Solution Wroclaw Builds a Culture of Safety Through the Safety Ambassador Program

  • LG Energy Solution Wroclaw advances workplace safety through the employee-led Safety Ambassador Program.
  • The initiative encourages employees to take an active role in identifying risks and communicating openly to foster a culture centered on safety.

More than 6,000 employees come together each day at LG Energy Solution’s Biskupice Podgorne site in Poland to work in a large, complex battery production environment. In a setting like this, safety becomes more than a set of formal rules; it is a shared responsibility that shapes work habits, communication, and mutual care.

To reinforce this mindset in daily operations, LG Energy Solution Wroclaw launched the Safety Ambassador Program, a company-wide initiative designed to reframe safety from compliance to action-based leadership.

Building a People-Centered Culture of Safety

The Safety Ambassador Program is based on a simple idea: safety stays stronger when it is engaging, not reduced to checklists. By shifting emphasis away from strict rules and audits alone, the program takes a people-centered approach that elevates employees as Safety Ambassadors in their own work areas.

Safety Ambassadors serve as proactive safety stewards, using observation, dialogue, and hands-on improvement to replace a top-down mandate with a bottom-up culture of mutual care. This approach encourages employees to feel responsible for protecting themselves and their colleagues beside them.

Safety Ambassador Program Overview and Key Activities

The Safety Ambassador Program centers on three pillars: observation, communication, and improvement.

  • Observation and Hazard Identification
Ambassadors regularly inspect workstations, production lines, and common spaces to identify unsafe conditions before they escalate. Observations are recorded through digital reporting tools such as the on-site PreventSol application. The system can document safety observations and support data-driven preventive actions, allowing the Safety Department to analyze trends and coordinate corrective actions.
  • Clear Communication Through Toolbox Talks
Short, practical safety check-ins – referred to as Toolbox Talks – cover lessons learned from near misses, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and critical procedures. The informal discussions create a space for employees to ask questions and openly voice concerns.
  • Improvement and Preventive Actions
Safety Ambassadors collaborate with colleagues and supervisors to design and carry out preventive measures, such as improving signage, storage practices, and workflow layouts. Solutions emphasize safety while balancing efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and regulatory compliance.

From Initiative to Impact

Since its launch, the Safety Ambassador Program has delivered clear results and a meaningful cultural shift.

  • Strong Participation and Real Changes
The program has generated over 20,000 safety observations and reports annually, leading to dozens of changes aimed at stopping incidents before they occur. These include the installation of physical safety measures such as machine guards and access‑control barriers, along with process changes that reduce hazard exposure.
  • Growing Awareness and Reporting Culture
Feedback indicates higher hazard awareness, greater willingness to flag irregularities, and more open safety-related conversations. Safety is increasingly considered less as a formal obligation and more as a routine part of daily work.
  • Safety, Quality, and Productivity in One Loop
Ambassadors link strong safety habits to higher quality and productivity. “Paying attention to even small safety details often leads to more careful practices during production,” one ambassador shared. This awareness supports operational stability, on-time delivery, and lower costs through fewer accidents and less unplanned downtime.

Four Safety Ambassadors from LG Energy Solution Wroclaw shared their perspectives on the impact of the program. Their comments represent a range of roles and departments at the Poland site.

Daria Litvinchuk, Administration Specialist of Formation Department, connects safety to the earliest stages of the process, well before materials reach the production floor. Working in procurement, her decision to join the program felt natural, and she now helps ensure materials and solutions meet Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements at the outset.

“My main role focuses on communication – I explain why safety is important, drawing attention to potential risks, and sharing recommendations in a calm, approachable way,” Daria said. “I also support colleagues in identifying hazards and taking preventive actions to make sure safety is a natural part of everyday decision-making.”

Anna Smolinska, Production Specialist of Formation Department, joined after she began noticing gaps in hazard awareness and responsiveness. “I noticed how important it is to have awareness of the potential risks around us and for us to have the ability to actively respond. At the same time, I saw how often this knowledge is lacking,” she said.

As a Safety Ambassador, she observes workstations, identifies hazards, and reports irregularities. Her involvement extends to initiating corrective actions, building spaces for open safety dialogue, and promoting OHS.

What stands out most to Anna is the change in how employees think about safety. “After discussing a potential hazard, I saw that teams begin to look for similar risks on their own and then respond proactively,” she said. “Knowing that these actions helped prevent accidents and make people more responsible and secure in their work is what gives this role real purpose.”

Michal Macanko, Shift Leader of Cell Area, treats safety as a non-negotiable responsibility for himself and his team, emphasizing that ensuring the safety of others is fundamental to his role as a leader. “I was motivated to join the program by the vision of having a greater impact on safety in my work area,” he said.

Since joining the program, Michal and his team implemented preventive improvements, installing machine guards in potentially high-risk areas. He notes a clear culture shift that has changed the team’s daily routines, resulting in greater awareness and earlier intervention that helps prevent issues before they escalate. “Developing the habit of paying attention to small safety-related details also leads to more thoughtful actions,” he said. “It helps people notice things that may have previously been overlooked, but which can ultimately affect product quality.”

Michal added that the program strengthens a people-first mindset by prioritizing employee health. He connects the approach to fewer incidents over time and a clear foundation for a workplace culture built on responsibility.

For Justyna Karolewska, Senior OHS Specialist of Environment, Health & Safety Deputy Department, the decision to become a Safety Ambassador feels personal. “Being a Safety Ambassador comes straight from my heart,” she said. “I believe that helping keep others safe is one of the most important things a person can do.” She pointed to a pattern that safety can fade into the background until something goes wrong, which keeps her focused on acting proactively before issues escalate.

As a Safety Ambassador, Justyna organizes safety-related activities on the shop floor to engage colleagues and share practical knowledge. She credits the program with strengthening her safety leadership skills, which has supported broader participation among others. Over time, she has seen day-to-day conversations about safety feel more routine and less formal, fostering a stronger sense of mutual care within teams.

Justyna believes a strong safety culture should feel natural, with teams working together to identify and resolve risks. She connects that environment to an accident-free workplace with better quality, productivity, and overall operational efficiency.

“Safety is not a stand-alone process – it is closely connected to every other business indicator,” Justyna said. “Discipline and dedication to safety support efficiency and productivity at the same time.”

A Culture of Mutual Care and Continuous Improvement

From administration and procurement to production and supervision, the Safety Ambassador Program is helping LG Energy Solution Wroclaw build a workplace culture where safety belongs in everyday routines, not only during audits or scheduled training.

As one ambassador put it: “See it, say it. Say it, do it. Do it, lead it.” This simple motto reflects the program’s essence – observe hazards, speak up, follow through with action, and keep improvement going.

By empowering employees through awareness, communication, and practical solutions, the Safety Ambassador Program supports LG Energy Solution Wroclaw’s commitment to become a workplace where everyone feels responsible, actively contributes, and goes home safely every day.
