LG Energy Solution Unveils Cutting-Edge Battery Technology at Battery Japan 2025

Battery Japan 2025, the world’s largest rechargeable battery exhibition, was held at Tokyo Big Sight, Japan’s largest convention and exhibition center, from February 19 to 21. This triannual event’s showcase of cutting-edge battery technologies, materials, components, and manufacturing equipment attracts experts from far and wide.

Je-Young Kim, CTO of LG Energy Solution, delivered a keynote speech on the company’s latest battery technologies and Intellectual Property (IP) strategy. He also took this opportunity to outline battery technologies and IP competitiveness it has developed recently through 30 years of pioneering research and development, emphasizing its technology leadership.

1. Technological Innovation of Material

    LG Energy Solution’s innovative materials have proved pivotal to the introduction lithium-ion batteries to the market. Its groundbreaking material technologies, including NCM, double-layer coatings, and Safety Reinforced Separator (SRS®), have been developed and applied for the first time, spearheading the early adoption of lithium-ion batteries for EVs.

    With over 30 years of material technology development under its belt, LG Energy Solution leads the world in number of battery patents. This extensive IP portfolio strengthens LG Energy Solution’s reputation as a leading innovator of the industry.

    2. Dry Electrode Process

    LG Energy Solution is at the forefront of LFP dry electrode technologies for large-scale manufacturing. Kim explained that the dry electrode process will reduce costs and increase energy density, before talking about how LG Energy Solution is expanding its already impressive patent portfolio with a strong focus on uniformity, continuity, and physical properties.

    3. BMS (Battery Management Solution)

    A Battery Management System (BMS) analyzes various battery-related data to assess its condition, optimize performance, and ensure safe usage. Taking things a step further, LG Energy Solution’s Battery Management Total Solution (BMTS) leverages years of supplying BMS to OEMs to deliver optimized battery performances to various clients.

    With a strong focus on enhancing safety, battery life, and performance, the company’s innovative technologies deliver more value not only to OEMs but also to EV owners. For instance, BMTS analyzes various battery data to guarantee safe usage and cutting-edge services.

    Building on these advancements, LG Energy Solution has launched ‘B.around,’ a new brand for its BMTS services, offering advanced solutions with comprehensive functions, from safety and battery degradation diagnostics to tailored solutions for software-defined vehicle (SDV) platforms.

    4. Next-generation Technology

      With over 30 years of accumulated knowledge and experience, LG Energy Solution has gained the essential capabilities it needs to make batteries and technologies that revolutionize the energy sector. For example, its unique solid-state batteries solve various material challenges using the company’s proprietary technologies.

      LG Energy Solution is also developing lithium-sulfur batteries with a high energy density relative to weight. This qualifies them for wide use in future aerospace technologies, such as Urban Air Mobility (UAM) and High-Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS), further highlighting the company’s commitment to shaping the future of battery technology.

      5. IP Strategy

      LG Energy Solution’s IP strategy is built on continuous innovation and patent leaderships across all technology areas, including materials, cells, packs, and BMS.
