LG Energy Solution is on a mission to nurture technological innovation in the global battery industry through inspiring collaborations with leading universities, tech startups, and scholars. As part of these efforts, LG Energy Solution hosts its annual China University Student Battery Innovation Contest in support of the next generation of leaders in battery tech. On December 3, the 6th edition of this competition took place with a strong focus on research that curiously delves into the field of electric and power batteries, strengthening its role as the driving force of the industry’s advancement.

Since emerging as a leading competition in the field of energy battery technology and innovation in 2018, the contest has received guidance and support from the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA) and the International Automotive Engineering and Technological Innovation Strategic Research Institute (CSAE-AISI), a subsidiary of the China Society of Automotive Engineers (CSAE). This influential contest is also held in association with the China Education Support Project.

Taking place at LG Energy Solution’s Nanjing facility, 164 teams made up of 693 students from 70 Chinese universities put their research to the ultimate test. Having run for six years, this year’s competition had more expert judges and participating teams as it continues to grow into one of the most prestigious new energy competitions that promote innovation and knowledge.

This year, the judges awarded the gold medal to Peking University, and silver medals to Jilin University and Xi’an Jiaotong University after eight finalist teams presented their fascinating and innovative research results in an intense showdown. The winner presented research on lithium-ion battery systems and their analysis of the all-Mn-based Li-rich cathode material, which boasts the advantages of high energy density, high cyclic stability, and low cost.

Aiming to encourage students to actively innovate, boldly implement their ideas, and contribute to new energy power batteries, the event was split into major studies and scientific outreach with an emphasis on four main themes: lithium-ion power battery systems, next-generation power battery systems, whole-life cycle management, and smart batteries.

On top of providing a practical platform for students to innovate and showcase their achievements, this contest also plays a crucial role in developing talent that benefits the entire sector. The goal is to inject more vitality and creativity into the new energy industry by motivating and inspiring the next generation of leaders.
