Building Batteries, Building Futures: How LG Energy Solution Michigan is Cultivating a Thriving Local Talent Ecosystem

To help build the workforce behind the energy transition, LG Energy Solution Michigan is looking beyond its technical capabilities and advanced battery production, strengthening its connection to the local community by supporting employee growth and creating new opportunities. The company’s mission is deeply rooted in fostering a sustainable local economy through skills training and the development of a strong talent pipeline.

To realize its vision, LG Energy Solution Michigan recently initiated a dual-pronged approach, bridging the gap between industry needs and educational opportunities through two efforts: an on-site college fair and a series of career fairs at local universities.

On June 3 and 4, LG Energy Solution Michigan hosted the very first on-site college fair, specifically targeting the company’s current employees to offer them a direct pathway to further education.

The fair provided a vibrant space for face-to-face interactions with representatives from local colleges and universities. Employees received information on degree programs, certifications, and online learning options from 12 Michigan colleges and universities, including Cornerstone University, Grand Rapids Community College, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Muskegon Community College, Grand Valley State University, Davenport University, Calvin University, Ferris State University, Michigan Technological University, Baker College, and Central Michigan University.

Participants were able to identify education options aligned with their career goals and schedules, including certificate programs and degree pathways at the associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s levels, with flexible virtual and self-paced formats available. Furthermore, by connecting directly with both external educators and the internal Learning and Development team, employees learned how the company’s comprehensive Education Assistance Plan actively supports their growth.

While supporting the current talent is vital, securing the future also requires attracting new talent. To this end, LG Energy Solution Michigan participated in career fairs at premier local institutions, including Hope College, Grand Valley State University (GVSU), and Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) earlier this year.

These events served as a dynamic forum to connect with students from diverse disciplines at various stages of their journey. The company engaged with recent graduates seeking their first professional roles, as well as interns planting the seeds for their careers.

Representatives from the Holland facility’s Talent Acquisition, Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) and production teams spoke with students about technical roles and opportunities for growth within the company. Several participating employees were alumni of the partner institutions, reflecting the company’s strong ties to its educational partners and the local community. Notably, the representatives also connected with college students on a non-traditional track who have returned to school after entering the workforce, highlighting the company’s inclusive culture that values diverse paths to success.

These parallel efforts represent a cohesive strategy to create a sustainable talent pipeline. The college fair focuses on retaining and developing the company’s current talent, ensuring the existing workforce remains at the forefront of innovation. Meanwhile, the career fairs focus on acquiring new, fresh perspectives and skills for the company’s operations.
